TOP WATER MADNESS

Sight-fishing and top-water fishing are considered as two of the most exciting methods in fishing. Personally I prefer to catch fish I can see, no matter do I catch with flies or with lures. Dry fly fishing is probably above all other fishing techniques I have tried, but top-water lure fishing is not far away and no less exciting to me. The moment of fish attack often raise the level of adrenaline, even if it is not followed with the successful hooking.
There are periods in the year when the view of many predatory fish is focused at the water surface. Usually this is the warmest period of the year, when a lot of small fish are swimming near the top of the water, bugs are emerging from the lakes or rivers and falling on top of them, and frogs are swimming at the surface avoiding to be eaten. Hard life for these creatures, and easy meal for fish species like bass or pike. Fishing lures imitate these type of fish preys with their shapes, sizes and moving action. They are often made of wood, plastic or silicone, in floating and sinking variants. Some are producing narrow and some wider swimming action, and can be silent or loud, doing buzzing or popping sound at the water surface. And at the end, they have colors! Some are realistic imitations of frogs, bugs and fish, painted with full of details. Sometimes good colors are not realistic, like white or fire-tiger decors, but nice results had been achieved with “no color” transparent lures as well. My theory is that fish that follow top water lure can sometimes notice the deception and can follow the lure avoiding to attack it. But when lure is transparent, predator is much less careful. This is especially true with asp, sea-bass or bluefish.
Bass or pike top-water fishing at the shallow lakes are really nice fun. “Walk the dog” lures, frogs or poppers are excellent choice there, no matter what fishing brand is producing these lures. Meggabass, Duo Lures, Savagear, Rapala, Seaspin, and of course Bumble Lure, among others, all are good choice for top water fishing. Top water lures are often retrieved parallel with the bank or the grass area, where most of bass or pike are waiting for the prey.
The most of the bass are hidden right in the grass or branches and here only weedless silicone lures or frogs can be retrieved without unwanted grass hooking. But there is one hard lure that perfectly catches fish in that grass empire – Bumble Lure. With the hook position above the surface it will never hook the grass or other obstacles in the water. This is a lure worth to try in the conditions when all other fishing weapons are silent. Lure action will attract bass and especially pike to attack, and will give you a lot of fun, so you can be quickly searching the active bass without grass cleaning from the hook.
There is another type of top-water lures I like. The lures that’s imitate grasshoppers or Cicada bugs like Duo Lures Shinmushi are extremely efficient especially in May here in Catia. Swarming flies can activate not only trout in the rivers, but the other fish predators like bass or chub. This is often sight-fishing when you chose fish you would like to catch and can be compared with the fly fishing in these terms.
No matter what lures you are using, fish can miss your top water lure, and some attacks will not be realized with the catch. What to do when fish miss your top water lure? Continue with the speed and action that provoke the first attack. Sometimes faster retrieving or pause can be triggers for a new attack. But generally there are no rules, all you need is your own experience, instinct and faith in lure and what you are doing.
New season is almost here. Sun will wake up our bellowed fishing friends and with warming they will raise up to the surface enjoying the sun rays. Enjoy catching your bass, pike or other predators and release them back to the water. Tight lines!
